Trying any activity for the first time can be a little daunting, and snowshoeing is certainly no exception. However, never fear! There are several organizations and clubs in the Edmonton area that offer regular gatherings for snowshoers of all ages and levels to experience our great outdoors together.
Here are just a few of the groups you may want to consider joining this winter, listed in alphabetical order:
Edmonton Hikers Group
While on pause earlier this year due to the pandemic, The Edmonton Hikers Group is back with safe, fun, and socially-distanced outdoor excursions- including snowshoeing- around our city. EHG also offers elevation and cardio training that can help improve your overall health while building up the endurance you'll need for longer snowshoe hikes.
Edmonton Outdoor Club
The Edmonton Outdoor Club offers regular gatherings at some of the most familiar and scenic local spots such as Hawrelak Park for outdoor activities such as hiking, camping, biking, inline skating, canoeing, cross-country skiing, and of course snow shoeing. The EOC is run by volunteers, and tries to make the fees for their events as low-cost as possible to increase accessibility. Check their website for hike dates, times, and locations.
Edmonton Trail Trekkers
The mission of Edmonton Trail Trekkers is simple- getting people outside! Specializing in Sunday day hikes during the spring, summer, and fall, the group turns to hiking, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing in the winter. Members explore different areas around Edmonton while meeting new people and getting in some exercise- along with an education about the outdoors. Fees are also extremely friendly at just $2 per hike.
Grant MacEwan Mountain Club
With the aim of promoting awareness about the mountains and providing a medium of access for people to experience the mountain environment, the GMMC organizes trips for its members to enjoy activities such as hiking, backpacking, climbing, mountaineering, backcountry skiing, and snow shoeing. Averaging around 200 members, there are no special prerequisites to join and activities are available for all skill levels from beginner to advanced.
