      Media Advisory: Hockey Unites Australian & Canadian Indigenous Youths

      For Immediate Release: Players on Australia’s first representative indigenous ice hockey team will travel to Canada this week to make their international hockey debut

      The Kaurna Boomerangs‚ÄĒAustralia‚Äôs first representative indigenous ice hockey team‚ÄĒemerged out of the Ice Factor Program from Adelaide, Australia. Ice Factor was created by Marie Shaw over 15 years ago to help re-engage disadvantaged students at risk of leaving school.

      They will travel to Canada on January 10, 2020 to make their international hockey debut. They will play hockey with and make a number of cultural exchanges with one of North America’s largest groups of First Nations people, the Cree, in Northern Alberta.

      This is a first time cultural exchange between these two nations. One of the important parts of this exchange will be the dreamtime stories that they will share with Canadians.

      This trip is presented by the Australian Ice Hockey Classic and Kerry Goulet, and supported by United Sport & Cycle, StopConcussions, Alberta Rink of Dreams Society, Boston Pizza ‚Äď Ice District, Quest Flemington Central Melbourne/Sydney, & Safe4Sports Prevention Program.

      Steven Marshall (Premier of South Australia) and Kerry Goulet (Ice Hockey Classic) celebrating the support of the government of South Australia in providing a travel grant for the Kaurna Boomerangs to visit Canada.


      • The Kaurna Boomerangs will visit the Four Bands Community of Maskwacis in Central Alberta for a cultural experience with the Plains Cree, and play a game of hockey
      • They will go on a Calling Lake excursion, to experience the hospitality of the Calling Lake Minor Hockey Association and the Woodland Cree of Bigstone Cree Nation
      • 3 days of activities planned where our visitors will experience fishing, snowshoeing, hockey training and many other Canadian cultural experiences. 
      • They will also attend Edmonton Oilers and Edmonton Oil Kings hockey games
