Affordability
No if’s ands or buts about it; hockey can be an expensive sport. From your league registration, to equipment, to tournaments, the costs can grow. We understand this is a huge barrier to entry in this sport; our passion for hockey is what has pushed us to help reduce as many obstacles as possible. Our starter kits ensure that each new athlete to the sport can get equipped with great fitting equipment for under $500.

We welcome every athlete to come back each year with their equipment and our team will take a look at the current fit of everything and make sure you are ready to go for the upcoming season. If you do need new equipment you can qualify for the starter kit discount again if the conditions are met.
Size to Fit
Why should you visit United to get your Starter Kit? What’s different about this experience? Both are questions we hear frequently as Hockey season starts, and both are questions we are happy to answer. A key element of those questions is our size to fit model!
Our starter kits are not a static group of equipment that you pick up and walk out of the store with; our starter kits are a shopping experience for your player. We make sure each piece feels great on your child; after all, we know that a happy player means a happy season for parents.
We get so excited each august when we can start to set up our starter kit area in the store, our team is full of passionate players who can’t wait to walk through a fit with you and your child. We like to think of our starter kits a comprehensive experience; in just under an hour each player will get to have a 1 to 1 consultation where they can try on, touch, and move around in their equipment, ask as many questions as they have, and leave with a great fitting set of equipment.
Our team of experts will start from the toes and work their way up; this ensures they can take the time to focus on their priorities:
- See that each individual piece “sits and fits right”.
- Keeping the equipment on as the consultation goes on to ensure all pieces of equipment not only fit your child, but they also fit together.
- And finally, using this as an education piece as well. Our team will make sure your child and you know how to take their equipment on and off, in what order, and make sure they feel confident in doing so in the locker room.
By the end of your child’s fitting they will be standing in front of you in all their equipment. They can move, jump, run and see how everything feels together. We prioritize your child and their comfort and safety. Let’s say after their first game of the season your child comes up and complains about their elbow pads pinching them… come back and let us know! We are happy to work on refitting to get the perfect fit for each person.

Your child’s first hockey season comes with a lot of excitement for your child; it’s their first practice, first games, and their first team! While your child may be full of excitement it is perfectly normal to feel slightly overwhelmed as a parent; we are here to help take away nerves and answer questions, we want you to know your child’s equipment as well as they do.
While we walked through the Starter Kit experience for your child, our starter kits are also built to help you. In our Starter Kit fittings, the parents are just as much involved as the child. Our team is made up of passionate people that love the game; people that want to educate, people that are knowledgeable, players, coaches, referee’s, and trainers. They all touch the game in their own unique way. Additionally, our team is trained in house by us AND directly from vendors on how to fit their products. We like to say there’s no question in hockey that could stump us, so come ask us anything!
As previously mentioned, our goal at United Sport & Cycle is to help remove and lower the barriers to entry in Hockey; this is an extension of that. The more education we can provide to parents will only help the sport and players. It is so important to us that you know your child’s equipment as well as they do.
We’ve talked a lot about our starter kits; this is an experience we hope to share with each new Hockey Player in Edmonton. However, this is simply an extension of our overwhelming love of hockey… We are and have been Edmonton’s home of hockey for over 95 years!
